The Story of Scoria
It all started with this question:
"What happened to our creativity after growing up?"
Founded & crowdfunded in 2017 on Kickstarter.
I'm Yara, here's a little story:
It was 2010, the last year of high school and the guidelines for my class project read: “present your portfolio pieces in any way you want”. While the invisible guideline of normality hinted to buy a folder or simply create a digital presentation, I wanted to do anything BUT that. So, I chose to spend my night gluing, cutting and painting on cardboard in my garage. Excited that it would soon be held together into a desk of drawers to hold my portfolio, I didn't sleep all night from an intrinsic motivation to create. Coming into school the next day, I brought with me this big piece of craft and a whole lot of internal laughter as I, a 5 ft human, walked into school with a huge piece of built cardboard drawers. I remember embracing the joy of thinking “the teacher is definitely going to think I’m crazy.. but this is way more fun than whatever a folder display can do”. Fast forward to 21, studying in University at one of the top Fashion Schools in Canada, things massively changed. Depression crept its way and self criticism became something I lived with. The pressure to succeed and fit in a world of systematic physical values forced me to be what others wanted me to be. One day it hit me, I knew it- Play has vanished from my life at 21. I knew I needed to get back to the first 18 years of my life. I went on to exploring all the ways to reconnect with lost “playfulness” all over again. Within 9 months of connecting with playfulness, imagination and creativity, my mental state drastically improved and my health became so much better. Afterwards, I went on to dedicating the rest of my creative work to inspire wellbeing in a different way. I decided to dedicate my life to create a brand that carries pieces & future experiences that can serve as a reminder of a connection to the playful, creative & imaginative qualities we had when we were children.
we do well-being differently.
